A WELLINGTON BUDGET.

THE MINING OUTLOOK. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Last Night. The outlook in the mining industry seems to be a little brighter to-day. The Kaitangata mine lias not yet resumed normal operations but it is reported as quite likely that the southern difficulty will be overcome and so clear the way for a meeting of the Committee to inquire into tho alleged victimisation of Plenderson by the Blackball Company. It was anticipated that the Departmental Commission which is to hear evidence bearing upon the revision of the Customs tariff would have commenced its work in Wellington this week but owing to the absence of one member a commencement has been set forward to the 14th February. Evidence will bo heard privately. CABINET RESHUFFLE. Sir William Herries left for England to-day by the Arawa. While away from New Zealand he will remain a member of the Executive without portfolio. The rearrangement of portfolios consequent on his departure.will be announced in a few days. __- THE FILM RENTERS. A further conference between the Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon G. J. Anderson), and the Film Renters Association was held this afternoon in private to consider the proposed tightening up of the censorship of moving pictures. FATAL ACCIDENT. Joseph Wilson in the employ of the City Corporation was killed at a quarry at Lyall Bay to-day. He overbalanced as the result of a sudden movement of a horse and fell to the ground, breaking his neck. CARPENTERS' WAGES. It is reported that Wellington builders and contractors have decided that in future carpenters are not to receive more than 2/9 per hour. This will be the uniform rate for city and suburban work. Hitherto 3/9 given for suburban work. The men are objecting strongly to the reduction and as a result several contractors have lost all their carpenters. It is pointed out that the rate decided upon is considerably in excess of the award rate which does not exceed 2/4 per hour. The men will meet to-morrow to discuss the position. While it is admitted that there might be some difficulty in enforcing a uniform wage on all jobs, the contractors are reported to be determined to stand firm as far as possible. TEAMS FOR CRICKET. A change has been announced in the Wellington team to play the Australians. H. McGirr being unable to take part owing to a recent illness the vacancy will be filled by W. Barclay. The final selection of the Australian team will be made to-morrow. PUBLISHING RESULTS. A report has been received by the Minister of Education regarding the publication of the results of the Matriculation and Teachers' exams. It was represented to the Minister by the Education Board recently that late publication of these results had caused considerable inconvenience to the candidates. The school governing bodies' report states that the Matriculation Examination is controlled by the University Senate and the matter will be discussed when the Department is conferring with the University authorities on other examination matters. The examination is held in the first week in November. There seems to be no reason why results should not be known earlier than is the case. Teachers examinations are htld in the third week in January and the results are announced towards the end of February. It is not thought that the work can be done any quicker, but a proposal is to be discussed by the Inspectors' conference to hold examinations during the September term holdiays. This would enable all the results to be published before Christmas.
