ORPHEUS SOCIETY.

SUCCESSFUL CONCERT. The 20th concert of the Palmerston North Orpheus Society took place in, the Opera House last night, and was attended by a large audience. Doubtless the splendid performance was mainly due to the untiring efforts of the conductor, Mr J. Holmes Runnicies, who had brought the members up to a high pitch of efficiency. The singing was full of colour, and the parts well balanced. The Society was equally successful in either light or heavy numbers, and encores were repeatedly demanded. Each item was well selected, and met with the keenest appreciation, perhaps the most popular being Edward Elgar's "The Reveille." It was given a very dramatic rendering, and had to be fully repeated. The next in favour was "Hope" (G. M. Garrett), while the rendering of Dudley Eucks' "Huzza" was also enthusiastically received. The soloists were Miss Violet Lammercroft (soprano) and Mr Cecil G. Swallow (flautist). To these artists much of the success of the entertainment must be attributed; Miss Lammercroft, who kindly took the place of Miss M. Esquilant, who is indisposed, possesses a powerful voice, and although occasionally forcing it, her efforts were highly appreciated. Of her numbers, "Melisande in the Wood" (Alma Goetz) was the most popular. Mr Swallow is not new to local audiences, but, nevertheless, his appearance on the concert platform is always acceptable. East night his items were marked with great artistry, and the. interpretations of difficult compositions were carried out with much musical intelligence. His items were "Ee Babillard" (Adolf Terschak) and "Rimembranzfi Nano. letane" (Guido Pagg?7. Tse Society have every cause to be proud of their twentieth concert.
