POST OFFICE ACCOMMODATION.
BIGGER STAFF REQUIRED. The postal committee of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce reported to last night's meeting that they had made further inquiry concerning the repeated complaints as to delay at the money order and savings bank branches at the local post office, and recommended that, after consideration, the secretary be instructed to write to the Postal Department, pointing out that at times many busy men are kept waiting their turn to be served. Until room permitted a further subdivision of the work, this delay might to a great extent be minimised if that Department which now controlled the administration of old ages, military, Imperial, police and epidemic pensions, would send receipt forms to the payees by post, as was now done by the Treasury, for their vouchers, which included superannuation payments to the Civil Service. The result would be that on busy days all such payees would wait in a queue once instead of twice as at present. The complaints and the suggestion made with regard to were rendered quite impracticable by the lack of wall space. It was observed that notices purporting to be a guide to the public were too numerous, unsuitably worded, carelessly written, and badly placed, and required complete expert revision. Mr J. M. Johnston complained that the savings bank staff was far too small to cope with the rush of work. Though the officers were most efficient and obliging, they were too hampered by the conditions of accommodation to carry out the work as expeditiously as required. The matter was referred back to the postal committee for consultation with the postmas£i"V.
