LATEST GENERAL CABLES.
SECRECY RESENTED. [By Electric Cable —Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, June 13. 'The Times," in a leader, condemns the reticence of the authorities regarding the attack on the British in Mesopotamia. It declares the concealment of unfavourable news can no longer be tolerated, and there has been too much secrecy in regard to the military operations in Mesopotamia. Permanent occupation might involve continuous warfare, which is more costly than frontier operations. The latter are defrayed by the Indian Exchequer, whereas the adventures in Mesopotamia and Persia are chargeable on the Home Budget.
CHURCHILL ON IRELAND. LONDON, June 13. Mr Winston Churchill, Minister for War, in an article in the " Sunday Herald " on the Irish murder campaign, states that no nation ever established its title deeds by a campaign of assassination. The British nation, after coming grimly through the slaughter of Armaceddon, is not scared bv the squalid scenes enacU?d in Ireland. It may be alienated, irritated, and ultimately infuriated; but it will not be terrorised. There are two things the British nation will never grant to an Irish appeal, violent or conciliatory; it will never concede an independent Republic or forcibly compel Ulster to participate in the Dublin Parliament.
PAPAL POLICY. ROME, June 13. The Papal Encyclical permitting Catholic sovereigns to visit Rome is the outcome of the Vatican's new policy of participating in Italian politics, and will enable Italy to enter into closer relations with other Catholic countries. The Vatican s proItalian policy has angered the Jugoslavs. It is believed that the King ot Spain will shortly visit Rome. ROUGH FOOTBALL. SYDNEY, Last Night. During Saturday's match two English three-quarters were ordered oft the field in the second half for repeatedlv questioning the referee s decision, and a third for punchuiff an opponent.
