Another of Napier's old identities in the person of Mr Henry Rudman, died suddenly at the residence of Mrs A. Brooke-Taylor, of Hastings, on Sunday last, in his 75th year.
Mr A. W. Rodger, chairman of the Invercargill' Electric Power Board and Southland League, was presented with an address and a draft tor £2OOO in recognition of his services to the district.
General Booth has arrived from Sydnev and on landing at Wellington last night was greeted by a large crowd of Salvation Army officers and general public, and was given a gratifying reception. Several bands played selections as the ship came alongside. The General said he was looking lorvrard to a great time in New Zealand. The Hon. Mr Coatcs, Minister of Public Works, arrived at Gisborne yesterday morning, having travelled overland from Napier. The Minister describes the journey, which was made during the rain, as one of the roughest he has experienced. There were numerous slips and trees across the road, which the Minister, with a long-handled shovel, assisting in clearAn early settler, who grew up with the Hutt district, Mr John Francis fudbv diea at his residence, Railway Avenue, Lower Hutt, early yesterday morning. He was born in Essex in 1828, and came out to New Zealand with Lord Petre as a lad in 1843 m the ship Commerce Sparks. From the time of his arrival in the country to the day of his death, he resided at liower Hutt.
The late Miss M. F. Barker, Principal of Nga Tawa School, who died suddenlv at Marton on Monday, had been in charge of the school since 1892 She had a brilliant scholastic career, having gained her M.A. with honours at Canterbury College. She was a daughter of Mr S. D. Barker, of Christchurch, and a granddaughter of Dr. A. C. Barker, who came out in the Charlotte Jane, one of the first four ships to come to Canterbury in 1850.
A leading and popular figure has s,e«n removed from the business and social life of Wellington by the death of Mr Peter Still, which took place at His residence. Maarama Crescent, earlv yesterday morning. Mr Miu was' 64 years of age, and recently had l>een ailing; but on Saturday evernn o he took part in the telegraphic chess match against Canterbury. He was taken ill during the evening, and had to be removed to his home. He passed away in his sleep.
