TROUBLE IN ITALY. [By Electric Cable —Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] ROME, June 7. The Government's position is precarious owing to the Socialists refusing assent to Signor Nitti's decree increasing the price of bread and flour. The Socialists are organising strong Parliamentary and public opposition to the decree. The railway situation is most serious, arising out of a refusal by railwaymen to move troops ana ammunition. The newspapers accuse Nitfci of weakness. SiEATTY'S TRIBUTE TO AUSTRALIA. LONDON, June 7. Speaking at the Western Australian dinnner, Admiral Beatty referred to the work of the Australian Navy during the war. He said it had rendered great assistance towards the capture of the German possessions; it had the honour of capturing the first German war vessel Comet, and the destruction of the notorious Bmden was another achievement of which Australia might well be proud. The first vessel to penetrate the Sea of Marmora was an Australian submarine, and later the Australia. Melbourne and Sydney came under his own personal observation where he had the opportunity of recognising the Australians as seamen and fighting- men. AN OBVIOUS CANARD. LONDON, June 7. Sinn Fein circles in London have informed the Australian Press Association that it is unlikely that De Valera would attempt to visit Australia as rumoured. It is more likely that De Valera would consult Archbishop Mannix at San Francisco. Probably Archbishop Mannix will be authorised to conduct a loan campaign in Australia, and possible De Valera would accompany Archbishop Mannix to Home. , AN IMPORTANT .CONFERENCE. LONDON, June 7. Replying to Sir Robert Cecil and Mr Wedgwood Boon, Mr Lloyd George striked that a special meeting of the Council of the League of Nations would be held in London on June 16th on the application of the Persian Government to consider the situation created by the Bolshevist occupation or Fnzeli. Doubtless an opportunity would be taken to consider the dangers and difficulties in Central Europe. PROHIBITION PROHIBITS. WASHINGTON, June 8. The Supreme Court to-day swept asule every contention raised against the constitutionality of the Volstaad Prohibition Enforcement Act and the validity of the nautfual prohibition amendment to the Federal Constitution.
