ASHORE IN BASS STRAIT. assistance sent. POSITION NOT DANGEROUS. [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] HOBART, Yesterday. The steamer Westralia, en route to Melbourne from New Zealand, ran ashore at t> o'clock on Tuesday night on Clarke Island, Bass Strait, iheie is a heavy south-east sea, taut the captain is confident of hanging on. Assistance has been dispatched, meluding the destroyer Yarra from Melbourne. . Kews of Hie Westralia mishap arrived bv wireless late last night. Ihe message stated that the steamer T.oongana, when CO miles out from Launceston, received a call for assistance. She immediately proceeded to the Westralia’s aid. and was expected to reach the scene of the mishap at 3 o’clock this morning. [Clarke Inland is one of the Furneaux group, lying off the north-east of Tasmania.] the vessel refloated. (Received Wednesday, 5.50 p.rn.) MELBOURNE, Last Night.
