There wore tumultuous scenes on the Bourse on the announcement by the Government that shares in the companies in Entente countries, which it was required should be surrendered under the Peace Treaty, were to be taken over at the quotation of January 10th. Dealer: declared the action was socialisation by trickery, and hotly denounced the Government. The agitation has caused a suspension of business, and Houses at Hamburg and Frankfort lime closed in sympathy. Stock Exchange rioters demolished the furniture owing to the leakage of the Government’s intention to confiscate German holdings in concerns established on Allied territory with a view to surrendering shares to the Allies not at current prices but at those ruling in January before the rises occurred. Some shares had quadrupled in value since. The difference means ruin to the speculators concerned, who allege that extensive operations have been conducted with Govern meat connivance.
