OVER THE RANGE.

[The " Times" car leaves Palmerston at 4 o'clock each morning, and runs via Aokautere and Woodville, to Dannevirke, and returning via, Te Rehunga and Kiritaki to Woodville, Pahiatua., and Ballance, and thence to Palmerston via the Gorge, 105 miles each day. These Notes below are supplied by our Travelling Representative, with headquarters at Dannevirke. Office in Ward Street, or Box 155, Dannevirke.] „ DANXEVIRKK DOINGS. Chautauqua has been drawing big attendances each day. The season closes to-day (Tuesday) with lectures by Dr Caroline Giesel. The stock market showed an upward tendency at last week-end sales, the fact is that in the Dannevirke district there is a fine flush of grass just at present and feed is very plentiful. A 'request has been received by the Mayor, Mr G. I. Anderson, that he, with the Town Clerk, should meet Captain Tahu Rhodes, A.D.C. to the Governor-General, at the railway station to-day, to make arrangements in connnection with the visit of the Prince of Wales. To give time for a talk, the Mayor and Mr Mears, town clerk, will travel with Captain Rhodes as far as Ormondville. When this interview is over and the wishes of the Government made known, Dannevirke will begin to prepare for the reception of her future Sovereign. The Prince will spend half-an-hour in Dannevirke, and it has been suggested that a short and slow motor drive around the town would be infinitely better and more agreeable to everyone than a packed platform with nothing but speeches. A member of the Hansard staff, Mr R. Thompson, is at present recuperating his health in Dannevirke. To-day is polling day for the election of a Licensing Committee for the Pahiatua electorate. Nine candidates offer themselves for the five scats. Three from Dannevirke town (W. Snell, H. Graham and J. H. Fairhurst), one from Dannevirke district (H. Chote, of Tipupukuku), two from Woodville (G. J. Goldfinch and JS. Harding), and three from Pahiatua town (J. r>. Wilson, J. B. >*Testla.lte and A. Ross). A "ticket" has been formed by Messrs Chote, Graham, Harding, Westlake and Wilson, and there is a movement locally to get these five elected. For the information of any in doubt it may be mentioned that anyone whose names appear on the electoral rolls may vote, there is no property qualification. The Dannevirke polling place is the Courthouse, and at Te Rehunga, the Public Hall.

Another of the old pioneer identities who helped to carve Dannevirke out of the Tamaki forest, passed away at Norsewood on Saturday afternoon, in the person of Mr Hans Christian Nordbye, eldest son of Mr O. O. Nordbye. The deceased settler has grown with the district, as lie was only eight years old when he oanie out in the good ship "Hovding" 4S years ago. He leaves two sons, /Messrs Louis and Cyril Nordbye, and a Aviclow, who receive the sympathy of many friends. PAHIATUA PARS. At a big meeting of telephone subscribers and townsmen, held in the offices of Messrs Adams and Tinney on Friday night, the position in regard to the telephone service was discussed. There was a strong feeling in favour of a continuous service, and it was pointed out that if the change is to be made it should be done at once before the issue of the next subscribers' lists. Mr W. Eccleton, who was a strong advocate, po'uted out the necessity for a continuous service in case of serious illness, and expressed surprise that Pahiatua had not bestirred itself before seeing that Eketahuna has got a continuous "service, and it is not so important a centre as Pahiatua. He suggested that a canvasser should be employed to get the necessary signatures to the petition, but after more talk it was decided that those present form themselves into a committee and canvass the town and district.

L,arrikinism is evidently oa the increase here for the other night an unfortunate Chinese greengrocer had a quantity of vegetables removed from the front of his shop' and strewn along the street. It is to be hoped the police will set busy and turn the "joke" against is perpetrators. Vegetables are dear enough not to be wasted.

Hazel Gelderd and Alfred Hayden were the winners of the points prizes for women and men respectively in the recent swimming carnival.
