BAD ROADS.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—A visitor to Palmerston North for the first time via Rangitikci Line would think he was approaching a country village, instead of a town of so much importance; in fact the roads into the township of Awahuri are infinitely bettor than that portion of Han frit ilc ei Line from Boundary Road to Feathcrston Street. This road is in practically the same state as thirty years ago, and is a disgrace to the Borough Council. An immense sum is collected in rates on Rangitikci Street as a whole, and a much larger proportion should be spent on its improvement. About once a month a man with a horse and dray may bo seen filling the pot holes in the road with stuff from the borough, pit (which is more than half clay), then the roller comes along and crushes what little stone there is into powder, in an unsuccessful endeavour to make an even surface. Hundreds of cars travelling at high speed pass over the road daily, with the result that the loose stuff just placed in the holes is torn out and deposited in the form of dust on the side of the road, and over the properties of the unfortunate residents along the route. And this, Mr Editor, in a town which possesses its own gasworks, where I am credibly informed they have a difficulty in disposing of the tar, and where waste of tar is even hinted at. I think, Sir, it is about time we followed Hew Plymouth’s example and appointed one competent to manage the affairs of this town.—l am, etc., PRO BONO PUBLICO.
