COAL SHORTAGE.

Giving evidence before the coal commission, Mr Richard Redmayne stated that the existing royalty owning system was against the national interest. Compensation to royalty owners on a basis of 12% years’ purchase would amount to £70,000,000. There was a disquieting fall in the coal output, amounting to 9 per cent, per person per shift, compared tvith tho -pre-war amount. This was partly attributable to the mines’ backward state of development, The miners were less skilful oAving to their long absence and the high wages disinclining them to take to pieccAvork. Air Redmayne suggested that the miners’ leaders should organise a crusade among the miners, pointing out the serious consequences of a reduced output. SHORT-LIVED STRIKE. [Aust. and N.Z.
