DANNEVIRKE AND DISTRICT. (From Our Special Correspondent.) The afternoon tea given by the ladies of the North Block yesterday was a marked success and the large attendance—about 200 —gave ample evidence of the groAving popularity of these social and patriotic functions. Maybe the fact of the draAving of the two art unions, the Glengarry and the Mayoress’, proved somewhat of an attraction, and the operation was watched with greatest interest. During the afternoon Miss Mona Mason gave a very pretty exhibition of fancy dancing and Mr s Baker, Miss Calder and Miss Stanley also contributed vocal items, adding considerably to the pleasure of the huge gathering. Numbers of cakes and flowers were sold so that the takings altogether resulted in £lB being added to the trail of the '.North Block. A bit more Avill be laid, ag the proceeds of a dance in the concert chamber of the Toavii Hall next Wednesday evening, which will terminate the efforts of the Northern section. To-day our High School second fifteen meet at football the third fifteen of the Palmerston North High School, on the latter’s ground. The Rev. Jno. Hobbs is the preacher in the Anglican Church on Sunday. Dr J. E. Riddell, and with him Mr W. Lints, have been in town for a couple of days on Trentham Scholarship business and report the scheme is groAA - ing fast. Borough Council matters. —Wm. G. Benson wag granted a motor driver’s license. Notice of appeal by Mrs Gurr’s solicitor against the decision of the court in regard to the Council’s plea for the fulfilment of a demand note given in connection A\ r ith the making of a footpath outside some property owned by her eight years ago Avag received from Mr T. H. G. Lloyd. A plaint re straying stock was received from Dr W. Beedie, Avho stated that “Avhen driving a car at night one never knoAvs Avhcn a cow Avill leave the rich, pastures of the watortablos for the roadAvay, ” and also complained of his garden being ruined. He urged the appointment of a night ranger. Councillors Thomson arid Robertshatve made similar complaints, and the Mayor concurred that something would have to be done. The ranger was present and stated that he had impounded 34 head of stock during the month, and a reference to the records would shoAV that the same names appeared over and over again. It was decided to take proceedings against all those offenders who had offended before Av*thin the previous three months. It was decided also to connect the ranger’s house with the telephone. From Gisborne came a plea for the internment of "all enemy aliens without exception, during the war and the using of their labour for the benefit of the State.” This communication was "received. ’ ’ A recommendation from the Library Committee was adopted providing that any member of the committee absent from three consecutive meetings forfeit his seat. This is not to apply, however, to members of the Council who are ex-officio members of the committee. A communication Avas received from Mr E. J. Barnes offering to pro\ T ido estimates, etc., for electric lighting. It Avas decided that they ask Mr Barnes to meet with them and discuss the matter, before taking action. The license of the OddfelloAvs ’ Hall was renOAved.

Permission Avas given to the ladies of the North Block to use the concert room of the ToAvn Hall for a dance on Wednesday evening. Maharahara settlers are arranging a dance to be held in the Horetaunga ►School on Wednesday next. Mr F. I’Anson is honorary secretary. Various competitions, ha\’ing for their object the entertainment of the guests and the benefftting of Red Cross funds, have been arangod and will be carried through by an energetic committee.
