Overcrowded Schools
MINISTER TO BE ASKED TO INSPECT. A conference of School Committees and headmasters was held in the Council Chambers last night at which Air J. A. Nash presided. Air Nash explained that a request had come- from the householders of College Street School that an indignation mooting be hold to protest against the present scandalous condition of the schools. But. before doing so he wanted a definite statement of the issues to be brought forward. Rov. Air Doull registered a vigorous protest against existing conditions. Tho chairmen of the other School Committees also expressed their opinions forcibly, Air J. A. Nash for Terrace End, Air Mahon for Campbell Street, and Air Bnehler (headmaster) for West End. After considerable discussion it was eventually decided to invite the Hon. Air Hanan, Alinister for Education, to visit Palmerston and inspect the schools, the committees personally conducting him, and afterwards entertain him in the Council Chambers with a vivid and forcible list of their grievances and requests. If this failed to have the desired effect he would bo then informed that a monster indignation meeting would be held, to force the Department to do something immediately to improve conditions. The subjects to bo dealt with wore allocated as follows: —Overcrowding of schools, Air J. A. Nash; larger grants to School Committees, Air Whitehead; smaller classes and increased teachers, Rev A. Doull; larger playgrounds. Air A. Mahon; vacuum cleaner. Airs Crabb; compulsory free dental and medical treatment. Air Sutton.
