Red Jersey Appeal

£50,000 WANTED FOR WAR WORK, An appeal is being made to tho citizens in this largo and prosperous district to raist money to assist Wellington in their effort to raise £50,000 on behalf of the Salvation Army to enable them to continue their noble and heroic work on the battle front. Statomcn, generals, admirals, journalists and others have given the highest praise to the Salvation Army’s work in England. From the first day of the war “The Army” was ready for any call. By institutes in camps, by large hostels and military and naval homes in cities, by the Intelligence Bureau and the Strangers’ Bureau (for tracing missing men), by visits to all hospitals, by street patrols, and by other activities the Salvation Army has won tho gratitude of many hundreds of thousands of the Empire’s defenders and their relations and friends. Large buildings used by the Salvation Army before the war —for example the Wesminstor street Workmen’s Hotel and Poor Man’s Shelter and many other institutions throughout Great Britain and France—were converted into hostels for soldiers and sailors. Many halls and other public buildings were similarly adapted by “The Army’’ to the needs of war. Thus was effected the saving of tens of thousands of pounds of public money which would have boon required in the organisation of now buildings. In each of those Salvation Army institutions there is a comfortable “rule of three” —tin* three R’s, Rest. Refreshment, Roe, rent ion. Up to a. fc\v weeks ago, a total of soldiers and sailors, equal to about hair the population of New Zealand, had enjoyed tho homely hospitality in the Salvation Army hostels in London. Napier has promised £SOOO, and Mastorton £OOOO to the fund and it is hoped that Palmerston, notwithstanding tho generous response made during tho recent campaign, will respond and contribute liberally. Subscriptions will bo received at the following places:— Borough Council Offices, “Standard” Office, “Times” Office, Banks and the Patriotic Society’s Office.
