Shannon Borough Council.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held on Wednesday evening. Present: The Mayor, Mr W. Murdoch (in the chair), Councillors Spencer, Hook, Gunning, Gardiner, Eichardson, Moynihan, and Fargher. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

Correspondence was received from the Rev. Palmer, secretary of the Patriotic Society, asking the Council to appoint a representative on the Gymkhana Committee. —The Council unanimously appointed Cr. Spencer. From lied Cross Society (Mrs Barber) asking for use of room and cupboard. —On the motion of the Mayor, it was resolved to grant the request, arid also to lit a side room with lock and key to hold the material and goods of the Society. From T. F. Martin. (counsel to M.A.N.Z.) advising the Council —(1) That the Valuer-General, if he thinks lit, could appoint valuer if nominated by the Council; (2) That the ValuerGeneral can amend his Government roll in consequence of an addition or removal of improvements‘and can authorise the local body to correct its roll, etc. —It was resolved that the following be a committee to deal with the matter of a valuation of the Borough, viz.: The Mayor, Councillors Spencer, Gunning and Fargher. It was resolved to accept the tender of Adam Burges for a dray. The Streets Committee reported that they had inspected Stansell’s drain and advised that the occupier of the railway land should erect a proper floodgate and lift foot bridge one foot higher. (2) The Committee reported on the condition of the old creek, and advised that a. drain be cut on the cast side of the road, in this way diverting the water from the old creek, etc. — It was resolved that the occupier of the railway land be notified to comply with the alterations as contained in the Committee’s report. (2) It was resolved to hold over consideration of the old creek until advice is received from Mr T. F. Martin (solicitor). A letter was received from the ranger, with a cheque for £1 3s driving fees. A letter was also received from the Horowhenua County Council enclosing a cheque for £34 Os lid. The Town Clerk reported that he had seen Mr Tippler re the ambulance, and he (Mr Tipler) agreed to forego all storage to date bat in future it would be 5s per month. —It. was resolved to thank Mr Tippler and accept the offer. The Mayor reported that Mr McMillan had offered through him the proceeds of an entertainment on sth November for the benefit of the repatriated refugee French fund. The Mayor said he had conveyed .this to the Red Cross Society who had the fund in hand. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr McMillan, The notice of motion re licensing or allowing cows to graze oik the roads on payment of £1 10s per annum, such cattle to wear a collar supplied by the Council, was considered. Councillor Gunning in a very clear and lucid speech demonstrated this was the best method of dealing with the evil. On the one hand cattle straying on the roads were a nuisance to the public, but on the other hand there was a great danger from tire if the grass was not eaten down or something done with it. —The motion was seconded by Councillor Fargher. After a lengthy discussion the Mayor said lie would not put tho motion as it was in conflict with tho. law of the country, viz., “Tho Police Offences Act, 1905,” On tho motion of Mr Moynhan it was resolved to obtain Mr Martin’s (solicitor) opinion on the matter.

A resolution of sympathy with Councillors Carter and Hook on having each a son wounded in the recent engagement at the front in Franco was passed. In the matter of kerbing the streets, it was resolved to obtain a written request from the ratepayers in Ballance and Plimmer Terrace signifying their willingness to contribute, halt payment.
