Horowhenua Jottings.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The novelty of a woman ploughing was witnessed in Otaki last week. The way she handled the implement would have done credit to many men. The Chinamen of Otaki and the immediate district have large areas ot land planted with potatoes, and in the majority of cases the plants are doing well. Provided we are free from frosts the crops should be good ones. Last year a late frost seriously set back largo areas of tubers. The milk supply at the Otaki Dairy Co.’s factory is steadily on the increase, and some twenty boxes of butter per day are now being turned out. At the end of the month cheese will be made. Misses lluthcrfurd and Grant, who have been on a prolonged stay at Kotorua owing t« the ill-health of the latter, returned to Otaki on Thursday. Mrs Meßoath, of Dunedin, is at present on a visit to Otaki. The diphtheria patient at Otaki—the only ease—is reported to be doing well. There is a strong fooling that it is time that there was an isolated building at the local hospital to deal with such cases, and it is probable that Mr W. H. Field, M.P., will be asked to approach the Government on the matter. The Otaki cemetery, which lias been under the control of the Horowhenua County Council, has now been vested in the Otaki Town Board, which body proposes to do much improvement, to the grounds, etc. Mr W. : H, Reynolds, of Otaki, was among the chief prize-takers at the recent Hutt bulb shove, and was successful in carrying oft the points prize in the amateur section. An up-to-date store, to replace the one recently destroyed by fire at Manakau, will be commenced in the course of a few weeks.
