YES—NO—BY THE COLUMN
(To the Editor) Sir, —Neutrals nowadays are looked upon with the very strong suspicion that self-interest comes before the public weal. I note with some surprise that a certain newspaper has for once broken bis neutrality after apologising to the tunc of a thousand words for so doing. At least, he has gone so dangerously near to siding with the enemy as to invite ostracism at the hands of all vigilant allies. Now, sir, it is well known that those who seek their own interests generally manage to gauge public opinion and to follow it; but the trend of thought to-day has so rapidly changed to one of almost universal acceptance of temxierance principles, that those who do not follow this example as vigorously as you do will be left in the lurch. Nearly every business man sees this; but here we have in our midst one shining example of “too slow to catch a cold. Beware, my friend, —I am, etc., “OLD TIMER.” Palmerston North, — September 14, 1917.
