Manawatu Hunt.
A SUCCESSFUL SEASON
The annual meeting of the Maiiawatu Hunt was held on Saturday evening, Mr S. R. Lancaster (President) in the chair. There was a good attend- of members.
The President's report and balance sheet were adopted. The report read as follows: —It is with great pleasure I have to report that the season of 1916 from a hunting point of view proved highly successful, in fact more so than the most sanguine amongst us expected. Hunts were held all over the district, and the fields in nearly every case were even better than in the previous season. In view of the circumstances under which our work was carried on, so many of our members having gone to the war, we came through better than was anticipated. Our hearty thanks are due to property owners for the use of their properties, and in many instances also for their kind hospitality. Our Steeplechase Meeting on the Awapuni coarse proved an unqualified success from a racing point of view, but financially unfortunately, this could not be said of ir. For some unaccountable reason speculation through the totalisator was indifferent, with the result that the handsome profit looked forward to did not materialise. Rough weather on the morning of the meeting militated against the attendance. However, by the generosity of many good sports, the kindly assistance of the Manawatu Racing Club, and substantial donations from the Feilding and Otaki Jockey C*ubs, the year ended with our financial position slightly improved. We did not hope,, under the circumstances, to more than hold our own and to find that we have to some extent improved our position is certainly gratifying. The hounds, under Mr J. Sexton, have been kept up to their strength, and hunted splendidly throughout the season. Puppies are being reared and some of them should be lit to hunt next season. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—Patron, Mr D. Buick, M.P.; President, Mr 8. R. Lancaster; Vice-Presidents, Messrs R, Bruce, J. Kearins, J. Balsillie, .T. Burmeister, R. 8.
