Parawanui made the pace from the ,gtart, Happy Jack being second, Master Strowan several lengths away jthird. Then came Katua, Sam Pan, {Merry Jack and Naupata. On coming jinto the straight after traversing once round Parawanui still had a good lead from Happy Jack and Master Strowan. On turning out of the straight Naupata moved up, Happy Jack falling. The order as they entered the home turn was Paranwanui, Naupata, and Master Strowan, but at the bend Naupata was in front, Master Strowan coming fast, caught Naupata well inside the distance and after a close finish won by half a length, Parawanui three lengths away third. The field moved away in a line, Immer, His Eminence and Byron were in that order as they passed the stand. On rounding the bend Master Moutoa ran into second place, then followed Square Deal. As they raced along the back Immer had three lengths lead from Master Moutoa who was a similar distance ahead of Square Deal. Before the straight was reached Gold Soult and Imarose moved up, but once fairly in the straight the issue was between the two leaders, and after a fine finish Master Moutoa won almost on the post by half a length, threeSquarters of a length between (Musi and third. Combustion momentarily showed out from the rise of the barrier, and then Botanist took the lead, and despite the efforts of Happiness and Combustion won easily by a length, same distance between seeond and third. From an even start Powder Fox was at the head of affairs, Chakwana, Peronilla, Tangawai and Black Lupin in a bunch. On reaching the straight Powder Fox was still in the lead, but Chakwana easily disposed of him, and although Goldstream made an effort to catch Chakwana he was only able to get within two lengths, one length between second and third. Arlington was first to show the way then Maltegarde shot out and led to within a short distance of the winning post, when Arlington made hia run and won by a neck. Ballyhar was three lengths away third, Lady Nolan and Scrutineer finished almost in a line with the third horse. Time 1.30.
