Press Association. —By Telegraph TBI ARC. Jan. 10.
Inquiries made on Saturday into the cause of the rise in the price of bread to <)i/od for 41b and 5d for 21b loaves elicited chiefly complaints that the alleged shortage of wheat had led to holding and bearing the market and that the proclamation fixing the price of flour had not been enforced, though known to be disregarded. One business man has written at length to the Premier on the injustice done to Timaru aiul Oamaru millers by iixing prices. War, or no war. prices must have gone up owing to shortage ht're and in ' ustralia. Fowl wheat lias been s< ling at 'is and 7s had been refused. The law of supply and demand ought io have been permitted lull play. One miller thought the price should drop immediately now that the crop is available.
