CRICKET
A Manawatu team journeyed to Dannevirke 011 Saturday and tried conclusions with the Dannevirke SubAssociation representatives. Neither team was at full strength the visitors displaying a weakness in this respect more so than the Dannevirke team. Some delay was caused in commencing play, and when stumps were drawn the game was unfinished, although the home team were well in the lead. The matting wicket and the rough outfield hampered the visitors who, taken all round, gave a poor display. Manawatu winning the toss batted, but only compiled 71, while Dannevirke had 73 on for one wicket at the luncheon adjournment. Wilson (57) and Smith (50) played good but not faultless cricket. Hodder was the most successful of the Manawatu bowlers, obtaining 5 for 53. The opening Manawatu batsmen showed better form in their second venture, (31 being up when the third wicket If ell. The tail, however, formed a procession, with the. result that the innings closed at 99. Hodder played a fine free innings for 43, while Childs (16), Brennand (15), and Bennett (14) also batted well. The visitors were entertained at luncheon by the Dannevike team, and returned home by the 8 p.m. train. Scores: — M AN A WAT IT. —First Innings. WELLINGTON v. CANTERBURY,

Showers fell in the morning in Wellington, but cleared somewhat before 11. when the Tlunket Shield match, Canterbury v. Wellington, commenced. The rain had done very little damage to the wicket. Canterbury won the toss, Carlton and Bishop opening the innings. Rain fell again as Wellington took the field. With the score at 28 Carlton gave a chance, which was accepted by Gibbes. At 12.30 play was stopped because of the rain with the score 03 for 1 wicket—Bishop (not out) 43. LATER.
Owing to continuous rain the match was not resumed on Saturday afternoon. but was adjourned till 11 a.m. on Monday.
