Hon. W. Watt, Premier of Victoria, and Hon. W. A. Holman, AttorneyGeneral of New South Wales, have discussed. in Loudon, the consolidation of the London emigration departments, and arrived at an arrangement whk-ii. if adopted, will eliminate fYnnjtetirion, secure more effective ?aporvision, better shipping arrangements, order and economy, and pave the way for the assumption by the Federal Government of control of immigration. The Public Trustee in London reports that £413,000 was collected for the Titanic disaster relief fund, and £383,000 has been Invested, yielding £15,000. £21,000 is being spent annually. The Daily Mail protests against the policy of hoarding up the capital. Mr C. G. Wade, leader of the Opposition in New South Wales, opened his campaign against the referendum proposals. He declared that if they were carried they woul<l make such tremendous inroads into the activity of the State Parliaments in dealing with their internal affairs that the residue of power would be too small to justify their continued existence. Further widespread soaking rain is falling in New South Wales. At the annual meeting of the Greater J. D. Williams Company at Sydney, the report was adopted. It stated the position was much improved with the introduction of substantial economy both in the administration and capital expenditure The directors are confident of a resumption of dividends as soon as the returns from the amalgamated concerns are forthcoming. A vote of confidence in the directors was carried and they were re-elected. The wreck of the Mindoro, off the Brisbane coast, has been abandoned. The Court found the loss was caused by an abnormal current and exonerated the captain. The police raided two gaming houses in the Soho district ot London and seized a large sum of money. Six of the accused were remanded and sixty-eight bound over. Owing to increase in wages, British shipbuilders lost three steamers, which a Dunkirk firm (France) will build at a cost of half a million. The Church Association in England has sent a petition to the King, signed by 36,000, respecting lawlessness in the Churoh of England. It urges bishops to enforce discipline, and thereby relieve Protestants from their intolerable grievances. West Australia is underwriting a two million four per cent loan at 98%. Three months' interest is payable on July Ist, and the loan is redeemable between 1942 and 1962. Frank Wootton, the jockey, is suffering from an abscess in the throat. n Many leading surgeons testified to the value of vivisection and combatted Miss Hageby's denunciation of serum treatment. They pointed out that Pasteur's discoveries had effected a great saving of life.
