COURSING.

Palmerston Coursing Club continued its opening meeting of the season yesterday by a sweepstake course, in which seven dogs competed. The hares were better than those coursed on the previous day. There were very few kills, and well contested courses resulted. Mr Weir, as slipper, was most successful in his judgment, and despatched each pair of dogs in a very creditable manner. Results First Round. H. O. Cross and M. Hurley's Happy Days defeated C. Hodge's Captain White. F. Evans' (N. S.) Lord Ashley beat Allingham's Hazel. F. Evans' Perfection beat W. Coffey's Lowell's Gift. J. Caldwell's Antarctic a bye. Second Round. Lord Ashley beat Happy Days. Perfection and Antarctic tied in their course, and in tho run off Antarctic won. After an interval of half an hour the final took place, Antarctic beating Lord Ashley after a fine and interesting course, in which the hare was successful in finding the home. A PRESENTATION. In the evening the members of the Club presented Mr Westmoreland, the energetic and untiring secretary, with a gold sovereign case, containing gold coins as a mark of appreciation of the manner in which he has fostered the interests of the Club. Eulogistic reference was also made to the President, Mr Lloyd. The next meeting will be held in about a month's time.
