Mr John Hughes, a member of the Legislative Council of New South Wales is dead. Association. The Rev T. T. Thomas, of Palmerston North, is resigning from the Methodist ministry in order to take up the medical profession. He will join the medical school at Otago University at the beginning of the year. Mr A. H. liussell, accompanied by Mrs Russell, is a passenger by the Athenic. due at Wellington on New Year's Day. The late Mr Andrew McDowall. of Taonui street, was laid to jest yesterday afternoon. The funeral was largely attended. Among the old settlers vviio acted as pall-bearers were Messrs Dugald McDowall, of Train street, Mr William McDowall, of Konini, nephews of the deceased ; Mr J. J. Lynch, of Raumai, and Mr 0. Death, of Pahautanui. The burial service was read by the Rev. H. G. Rosher. Lady Stout landed at Auckland by the Malwa after an absence of nearly tour years in England. She stated that the women's suffrage movement was making rapid strides in England. She has no doubt whatever of its early success. She spoke of the immense number of women who were taking an active part in the agitation, and stated a large number of men were joining the movement.
