The local hookey eeaann opened yesterday, with a matoh between Old Boys and Post Offipe. The game resulted in a win for Old Boys by 8 goals to 1. Post Offloe attacked in the ilrst part ot the g&me, and drotv first blood. Old Boys, who had been playing one man short, were then reinforced by Simmondß, who arrived late. Old Boys from then ou had the advantage, their condition and •combination proving too much for the Post Office. The most entertaining part of the game was an exhibition of sliding given by Stanley of the Post Office. Mr F. Garner refereed.
Quito a number of other hookey players were out on No. 2 ground, aud had rather a beneficial practice. If suitable arrangements can be made a match will be played on the Showgrcund on Easter Monday between tliQ Old Boys and the winriors of the Wellington championship last season, a team which had the admirable record of 11 wins and one draw.
The Campbell Street Old Girls commoncod practice yesterday morning, when there waß a good muster, Practices will be held on Wednesday aud Friday mornings at the Camphell Street School courts. The meeting called ror last evening to form a junior hookey club lapsed owing to insufficient attendance. 1 \ A NEW RULE. The following new rale, says the Dominion, is contained in the rales of the game of hookey issued under the authority of the English Hookey Association, which lias just come to hand for the present year"lt is provided under the heading 'penalty oorner,' that a player of the attacking team shall have a hit from any. point on the goal line he may ohoose, and at the momont of such hit, all the defending team (their stiokß and feet) must be behind their own goal line, also all the attacking team must be outside the striking circle in the field of play." Hitherto any breaoh of a rule by the defending team inßide their own striking circle has been penalised by either pn ordinary "bully" or a penalty "bully." The "Penalty Oorner" rule as above will ip future take the pla< e of these.
It is expected that the new regulation will be approved by the local Hookey Association at its next meeting, and it will be observed throughout New Zealand this season.
