HIGH SCHOOL BOARD.

ORDINARY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the High School Board of Governors was held last night. Present: Messrs W. Rutherfurd (Chairman), G. Hirsch, J. N. Barnicoat, W. Park, Oollingwood, VV. T. Wcud, Rev. U. C. Harper, and Mr J. E. Vernon (Rector). An apology was received from the Rev. I. Jolly. Mr D. Munro, Secretary of the Scottish Concert Committee of the Caledonian Society, forwarded a cheque for £8 ss, proceeds from the concert. The Education Department forwarded two books for the school library entitled "The Animals of New Zealand" and "The Manual New Zealand Etymology.' RECTOR'S REPORT. The Rector reported that the 'attendance was about the same as last quarter, and the average was 130. He recommended that next year an alternative course be added, for girls, who do not wish to work for any publio examinations. This course would include cooking, dressmaking, hygiene, domestic economy, and physiology. The present staff could undertake all the above except dressmaking, and the Board was asked to appoint an instruotress in that subject. The following pupils ou the recommendation of the Rector have been awarded senior free places without special examinationJ. Bennott, A. Ihle, W. Fitt, May Hodder, W. Lang, Aileen Lanrenson, A. Young, O. Young, Maggie Harris, and Roy McDowell. The following have been granted an extension of their junior free places for one year, they being under 15 on the Ist December, 1908; K. Buchanan, N. Farland. and Will Bradfield.

It was resolved that the report bo adopted, and that the appointment and remuneration of an instructor for dressmaking be left in the handß of the Rector and Chairman.

It was resolved that fresh tendora be oalled for printing, the lowest tender to be accepted. In accordance with the recommendation of the Technical School Committee, J. Carson was granted one free term next year in plumbing, conditionally ou his attending for two terms.
