NEW SUBMARINE.

Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Government has sent to England for a new submarine cable, which will be kept in stock, to be ready for laying if the necessity suddenly arises. The cost of the cable is about £8000. Its purchase is necessary because the existing stock is required for the proposed cables between Elmsville Bay and D'Urville Island, thence to Stephen Island, and another connecting Central Island with the mainland near Riverton. The Premier attaches great importance to the laying of these short and imparatively inexpensive cables, as they will enable passing ships to keep in touch with the mainland, movements being reported and masters informed of weather conditidns to be expected.
