INFECTIOUS HOSPITAL
Discussed By The Board
Question Deferred
Mr S. W. Luxford presided over the monthly meeting of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, held yesterday. The principal business was the consideration of the Executive Committee's xeiport in regard to the hospital for infectious diseases. The Committee stated that rough plans had been drawn under IJtf.Valnrtine's instructions by a Government draughtsman and were placed before the Board. The Committee recommended that tenders be called for the erection of the building, and that the pfeient isolation ward be converted into a doctor's residence. After consultation with Dr. Valintine, the Committee recommended that at present it was not necessary or advisable to erect con tagious diseases hospital at Feilding or other places outside Falmerston.
A letter was also read from Mr L. G. "West, architect to the Board. He had received a sketch plan of the building, but not having had an interview with the Health Officer as to details of the finish desired, he estimated the cost at £1100, if erected with a view to durability and perfect sanitary appointments. The Buni stated would provide for a limber building, with concrete and brick foundations, lined throughout with elastic pulp plaster, water service separate from main hospital^ sewer drainage, and perfect ventilation. If the estimate was to be kept down to £850, it would have to be done by using wooden house blocks and a general curtailing in quality and construction of details and finish.
Mr "J. G. Wilson, who was unable to be present, wrote suggesting that the question of taking the isolation ward ior the doctor's residence be deferred, and an inquiry made as to whether it would not be better to make the ward into a nurses' home. The doctor could be given a couple of rooms upstairs in the hospital. The nurses were not as comfortably provided for as they should be, and if possible they should be housed outside the hospital.
The Chairman thought Mr Wilson's suggestion was a good one. Mr Nathan: If we go on with this building we shall have no money left for » doctor's residence.
The Chairman thought it would be better to deter consideration oir the whole matter until next meeting, and this course was adopted.
