UNION FIXING FINES.
Allan Opp Tactios.
Court Dosen't Like 'Em.
Press Association. Wellington-, Yesterday. The Arbitration Court case Plumbers Union against Isaac Jackson and son, in which the defendants were charged with having employed a hand at less than the stipulated wage, -was compromised, and Counsel intimated to the Court that the respondents' breach had been an unwitting one. The Union had resolved that the case could be met by a fine of j£3 10s, and the Court was asked to fix that amount as penalty. The President said the Court would do so, but he wished it to be understood that such an action was not to be taken as a precedent. The Court objected to agreements being made as to penalties. Such a course might lead to oppression, and many objectionable results would follow if it wore allowed to become a practice.
