Land Legislation.
The leader of the Opposition has given- the Government a nasty nut to crack by announcing his intention of moving an amendment to its proposed amending Land Bill in the direction of enabling Crown tenants to become, either as cash purchasers or time payment purchasers, the freehold owners of the land of which they are in possession. The proposed amendment destroys the bogey of " the aggregation of large estates " by providing that if a leaseholder is already the freehold owner of 2000 acres of second class land, or of 640 acres of first class land, he will not be able to take advantage of the right of acquiring the freehold. We do not, of course, know what Mr Massey hoped to gain by publishing in advance his intention of moving the amendment. The probabilities are that it will lead to the abandonment of the amending Land Bill by the Premier, who of course realises that on the question of the freehold, party whip or no party whip, a large number of his supporters must YQte against him.
