BAND CONTEST.
Tho First Competitions.

Masterton, Monday,
The sixth annual contest, held under the auspices of the North Island Brass Band Association, was opened in Masterton to-day. Although several bands which were expected have found themselves unable to take part, -the contest will still be a record so far as the number of competitors goes. Fifteen bands will compete, which is two more than the previous best entry. In addition, several bands, not representative enough to perform test pieces, will havo individual members taking part in the solo competitions. Pine weather is the one thing needed to ensure success.
The carnival commenced with the B Flat Baritone competition, in which there were 14 entrants. A number executed, the test solo, " Une Perle de L Ocean," a fantasia by Theodore Hoch, but owing to two of the competing bands being unable to arrive in time it was decided not to give a decision, but to hold ihe event open so as to allow the soloists of those bands to compete. The euphonium contest was postponed for the same reason.
The local representatives left for Masterton by the mid-day train yesterday. Tne band will perform to-day at the garden party, which is to be one of the features of the contest programme, and play the first test selection tomorrow. .'
