Hawke's Bay Beats Rangitikei

A Peculiar Game.

The match between the Hawke's Bay and Rangitikei teams at Bulls on Saturday produced a very close game, which presented some rather peculiar features. Two goals were scored in the first spell, both counting to Hawke's Bay, though N. Wilson (Rangitikei) shot one of the balls bet we. n tho posts. He was defending, and in attempting to put the ball out of play mis-judged, and scored for the other side. Wilson, however, made up for the mistake in the next spell by scoring after a brilliant run from one end of the field to the other. Immediately afterward?, by a fine shot right over the heads of the Hawke's Bay men, his brother brough. the scores even. No points were registered in either of the following spells, due principally to the fact that the gaipe was taking place in a fairly heavy raifi, which with the long grass made fast and good play impossible. In the beginning of -tbe fifth spell Qrmond scored for Hawke's Bay, and soon afterward N. "Wi'son Wade another great run down tbe field and again the scores were even. Tho pixth and last spell produced no alteration in the score and the gatno ended in a bye. It was agreed to play on, bowever. . About half way through another spoil McKenzie scored for Hawke's Bay and the visitors thus won by a point. For Rangitikei N. Wilson played the best game, though at times he was inclined to leave his, place, and but i r the help of Keiller, who was a very safe No. 3, the score would have been further augmented. For Hawke's Bay McKenzie was very safe, though at times he rushed to the front to score when he should have relied more on his No. 2. Russell played a good game throughout, ancl IJelson showed great briljia-ipy at times. Qrasond played his ii-uil unselfish game, but U inclined to go back too much at times. The Hawke's Bay __•- n were not seen at their best form. Doubtless tha heavy ground was against them.
