GAY DAY AT WOODVILLE.
Opening of Reserve, Baths, and Water Works,
Yesterday was a gala day at Woodville, the occasion being the opening of the local water works. The Hon. Jas. Carroll was prrsent, representing the Ministry, and (here were amongst the gursts of the Borough Com cil representatives from the boroughs of Palmer- ) ston North, Pahiatua, and Dannevirke. Palmerston was represent: d by Cr Edwards (Acting-Mayor), Cr Copeland. and Mr Keeling (Town Clerk). The visitors wera driyen to the reservoir, winch is situated on an eminence at the north end of the town, and greatly admired ihe provisi-n made by tho engineer, Mr Metcalfe, for the inauguration of a cotup'ete water system. Returning to town, the inhabitants were found to have gathered in great number?. 'J he Mayor (Mr Taylor) ana the Hon. Jas. Carroll from a decorated pla form on the main street voiced the general pleasure felt by all concerned at the completion of ihe water system, after which the Minister turned on a jet from one of the hydrants, aad that being followed by o;hers, all present admired the splendid exhibition of high pressure efficiency which ensued. Some ladies, who were spectators, pot soundly drenched in earnest of the chiistemng. An adjournment wa3 then made to the swimming batbs, which were declared ' pened by Mr Carroll preparatory to a programme of sports being entered into The Minis;er having ako duly declared the recreation grounds opened fot the purposes for which they' were intended an adjournment was then made to one of the local halls, where a very nice repast had been set out, and where , various loyal and local toasts were ' honored; ainongstrthe speakers being the Hon Mr Carroll, and Messrs Hall and O'Meara, M's 8.R., Toswill, Metcalfe and others. The Hon Mr Carroll's speeches were delivered in bis usually happy style, and the character of his remarks and the remarkable grace of his diction won the admiration of all who were privileged to ba preseEt, The celebration was in every respect successful in the cxtivmo, and rtflVcted great credit.upon the inhabitants and the local councillors who were entrusted, with tlja aw&ngeweiUe,
