London, Augusb 26. Two Boer sympathisers at MMdleburg have been sentenced to two raontbs' imprisonment for secrstly entertaining the enomy, and about one hundred disfranchised burghers at Dorp, Middleburg, and elsewhere for treasonable conduct.

Commandant Loiter has sent an unprintable reply to Lord Kitchener's proclamation.

London, August 27. Commandant Lotter's force has taken refuge on the summits of Achtersburg in the Steenberg ranges, 25 miles south of Middelburg, Cape Colony. Lieutenant-Colon el Scobell, who is pursuing' him, secured and and shot a hundred horses, and fired the grass on the Aohtersberg. The invaders in Cape Colony are split into fragments. The engagement at Uniondale was fought on difficult ground. Besides the losses mentioned yesterday, ten of the Hussars were captured before Scheepers's commando retreated.

Major-General Beatson is driving Scheepers's force northwards.

Three British officers and sixtyfive men on Major-General Elliott's right flank north of Ladybrand were surrounded on unfavourable ground and captured by a superior force. They were afterwards released.

One was killed and four were wounded during the action.

An inquiry into the matter has been opened.

The Daily Express correspondent states that 400 burghers have surrendered at Middelburg. Mr Steyn and General De Wet are reported to be near Basutoland.
