LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.

; Auction Sale. — Mr, J. Maysmor announces. that he will sell to-day, under instructions from the Trustee, a quantity of clothing, drapery, furniture, groceries &c., with several good hacks. The Christmas Spobts.— lt will he seen from our report of the meeting m connec^ tion with the ITeilding Sports that an un: usual strong committee ha 9 been appointed. Notwithstanding the general commercial depression, everywhere observable, we trust to see a liberal, yosponsa given by the residents and settlers to the canvass for donations to the funds. The prizes given; last year were matters .of wonderment to other centre 3 less spirited. We may possibly be too sanguine hut we hope.tb;see even these eclipseYl by those to he, competed for at the approaching gathering. The Timber astd Q-iura Duties.— We notice that the necessity of re-imposing the timber duty is beginning to attract attention m the House. . A few days since Mr. Murray asked the Premier, •whether it was the ' intention of the Government to reimpose the duty on Foreign timber. Sir George Grey replied that the information would be given when the Financial Statement was made. This reply not appearing altogether satisfactory to Mi. Murray, the Premier intimated that there trould he no objection to- the hon; member for Bruce introducing such a measure himself. On "Friday, m reply to Mr. Ballanee, Sir Georjje Grey promised that returns of the quantities of timber and grain for the months of July and August should be laid on the tahle with as litt le~delay as possible, arul;thafc those for the month of September shouH be produced as soon as they had been prepared. Enterprise. — We n were greatly pleased to notice oorn r Monday several trucks laden with baulks of timber, haying'the name of the wood and the measurement painted on each : baulk. Upon enquiry we learned that the timber was on its way. to Wellington, /where it will be shipped to England per "Rakaia. It seems that Mr. Malcolm, of the Makino MUlj being anxious to te3t the [ ; valueof New Zealand timber m the Home market, has determined to send to London I a trial shipment of tot«ra,rimu, and matai. i There can be no question that some of our native woods, are for furniture purpose* equal to any woods m the. world, and we fancy that their valme only requires to be known to ensure a ready market for any. amount we can export. We trust that Mr. Malcolm's enterprise will meet with the success it deserves. '-/ ', : •;--Sib" WitHAM /Fox at Eault!. — • The liecture advertised to .be delivered :by Sir William Fox at Halcombe on Friday eveniug did not . come off. Every preparation had been made, and a party of gentlemen assembled at the station to escort the worthy knight to the school ifoom. Tlie train arrived; however, but no Sir William, no note, of apology, "no nothing." The members of the escorting par'ty.lookod at each other m blank amazement. Sir William's hbnrarrival was a groat disappointment, but the non -receipt, of any letter explaining the cause thereof from a gentleman of his rank and attainments could only .. ho accounted for by a supposition too horrible to be entertained:" The party- to -wile atr-ay the. evening, and smother : their evil forebodings,'; proposed a dance, but a fatal obstacle presented' itself— the only musician m the ] plaec being engaged elsewhere, so the party and-the audience- had to make the heat ! of it'and go home. Tip. ,to Monday- evjening no message had been received from the gallantknight to i allay: the: anxious, fears of the Good Templars. \ ;
