It appears from complaints which reach us from time to time that the settlers of Fitzherbert are no better off for roads tKan.-those m Kiwitea. It is true that 1&e late Provincial Government did make a piece of road from the centre of Palmorston to tho bank .of the Manawatu and also built : a Abridge across' the river at a cost of some £6000. This work no doubt greatly assisted m the sale of land and tempted many to invest who would not under other circumstances have done bo. But now comes the difficulty. Many, of those investors have gone to settle on their land, but through the want of roads find that they cannot continue there. The bridge, to .begin .with, ia .really of little use, 1 as a 'horseman cannot get either, on or off it m safety.^ The Government made tho bridge without approaches, consequently the structure is almost useless for traffic, and the £6000 expended is up to the present time thrown away. We would suggest that immediate steps be taken to bring this matter under the notice of thel Government with the hope that they may be induced to finish a work which they so wisely commenced. We believe that d62oo^would complete the work' and make the Bridge what it is designed to be, a public convenience. A sum of money will also be required from some of our local bodies to open up -at least one of the main lines leading to the bridge so that settlers may be enabled to get to their homes, if only with a pack-horse. We believe the Highway's Board intend doing something this summer to open up the district. If .such is the case it is to be hoped that the settlers of Eitzherbert will not have much longer to complain of the inaccessibilty of their homes. »,
