MEN FOR MINING
BETTER CONDITIONS PLANNED. (Rec. 10.55 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 30. Pointing out 'that manpower for miners had reached the lowest level, the president of the National Union of Mine workers (Mr Will Lawther) set out ideas to make mining more attractive.
The new coal commission, he said, should plan: Firstly, that wages would be equal to those of other important industries; secondly, a guaranteed five day week : thirdly, two weeks holiday with pay; fourthly, more nourishing food and a more effective medical service; fifthly, an entirely new attitude toward young miners who must be made to feel that they were, the most important of the nation's citizens and that to be a miner is to follow an honoured occupation.
