OTAGO BEATS WELLINGTON PLUNKET SHIELD CRICKET. (Press_ Assn.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 27 Haying been 85 runs behind on the first innings, Otago made a splendid recovery to beat Wellington in the fourth day's play in tne Plunket Shield cricKet match by three wickets when play was continued in weather more suited to football than cricket.

Wellington resumed their second innings with five wickets down for 19 runs and failed to make a recovery, the who.e side being dismissed for 42. The Wellington batsmen made a feeble showing against the fast-medium bowling of 11. Silver, who followed up his four wickets for 85 in the first innings by capturing six for 20. CANTERBURY'S SUCCESS VICTORY ON FIRST INNINGS. (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 27. After a game which provided more ups and downs than the average, Canterbury, after a. further collapse in their second innings, obtained a first innings win in the Plunket Shield match against Auckland, which concluded today. Rain delayed the start of rilay today the Canterbury innThgs did not' continue until shortly •before 3 p.m. Canterbury required 204 runs to win outright with nine wickets in hand, and there were 173 minutes left for play. When Uttley went out, Canterbury's chances of getting the runs diminished, and when Anderson and Burgess failed to get going, five wickets were down for 59. with nearly two hours left to play. However, Shand and Butterfield, the heroes of the first innings, held Auckland out for 45 minutes, and then Butterfield and Scott stayed in for a further hour to save the game for Canterbury. Butterfield gave a fine display of defensive batting, and Scott, after being dropped soon after he came in, also resisted his natural inclination to hit,. a.nd played a most valuable innings.
