CHESS TOURNAMENT

CHAMPION BEATEN. (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 27. The best fought game of the third round of the championship matches in the Victory Chess Congress tonight was between R. G. Wade, the present champion and the runner-up to Lajos Steiner, the Hungarian grand master, in the Australasian championship in September, and T. Lepviikmann (Wellington). A large attendance saw a most enterprising game, Wade sacrificing a rook for a knight to obtain a powerful centre attack, but Lepviikmann conducted a most skilful defence to hold his material advantage and won.

Two rounds were played today. Only one championship match in the second round was completed, H. McNabb (Wellington) beating H. A. McGilvray (Otago). Better progress was made in the third round tonight. Among the winners were M. Stewart, the young Canterbury player, and H. 11. Abbott, the present Canterbury champion and former holder of'the New Zealand title, and they are now the championship leaders with two wins each.

The progress positions will be clarified tomorrow morning when the adjourned games will be completed. Due to an error, the Wade-Steele match, which was adjourned with Wade two pawns up, is to be replayed. Yesterday's results were: Championship.—Second round: McNabb beat McGilvray, Abbott v.
