DEMAND FOR DOCTORS

(1.45 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Nov. 24. Criticism of the Federal Government for its failure to release more doctors from the Services was made in a statement issued by the British Medical Association. It said that military establishments were overstaffed with doctors and nurses. Hospitals and sanatoria could not be. staffed, patients died from tuberculosis in their own homes and doctors were breaking down and dying under the strain of trying to provide medical services. With the cessation of hostilities it was anticipated that many medical officers would be almost immediately discharged to return to civil practice. That anticipation had not been realised. The position was so grave that it could only be rectified by strong public pressure or immediate action by the Government.
