BUNNYTHORPE

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The official opening of the Bunnythorpe School baths took placo last Saturday afternoon. The day was ideal and a largo gathering of parents and scholars assembled. Mr C. Steven 6, chairman of the School Committee, in declaring the baths open, referred to the first movement in raising the funds for the baths which was when £25 was donated at the _ school jubilee in 1933. This amount was unproved by donations placing the fund at £4B. The matter was held in abeyance for some years because of the war. The committee in 1943 again commenced raising funds, with a promise of a subsidy from the AVanganui Education Board of £1 for £1 on the amount raised, and the committee then saw its goal within reach'. A contract was let for a bath, 35ft by 20ft, with dressing sheds, costing about £230. The baths were a credit to the contractor and the school. Mr Stevens referred to the valuable assistance rendered by Mr J. Scheidt and the Glaxo Company in arranging for a supply of water. The manager of the factory (Mr A. 11. Faulkner) had also assisted. Mr Stevens thanked the public for their donations, and on behalf of the school declared the baths open. Mr Stevens took tho first plunge. Mr F. A. McKenzie, a past chairman of tho committee, congratulated those concerned on ercctiii" the baths, which were a credit to the district. Mr AA r . B. Dnthin, on be half of the settlers, expressed thanks. Mr Schcidt said it had always been his pleasure to assist any movement toward tho improvement of’- the school. The headmaster (Mr Abraham) expressed thanks to tho committee for their work, and as _ there wore only five pupils who could swim ht hoped that in the near future many would learn the art, which was a valuable assist. Afternoon tea was provided by the committee and thanks and cheers wore given to all who had assisted in making the gathering a success.
