Bank of New Zealand Bill.

After continuing its discussion last night, the Legislative Council passed the second reading of the Bank of New Zealand Bill shortly after 10 p.m. by a substantial margin after a division had been called for.—Press Assn. Domestics’ One-Day Strike. The fact that six domestic servants of the Dannevirke Hospital Board’s staff had staged a one-day strike recently was reported to a meeting' of the board. It was stated that the girls came to Palmerston/.North to interview the district manpower officer to ascertain if extra staff could be made available.

Trustees And Bank Shades. The Bill placed trustees in an exceedingly dangerous and vulnerable .position, said Hon. W. Perry, speaking on the second reading of the Bank of New Zealand Bill in the Legislative Council yesterday. One of the Bill’s bad features was that it failed to give trustees protection and .was an invitation or encouragement to litigation on behalf of or on the part of beneficiaries. Girls’ Sit-Down Strike.

A sit-down strike was held last week for a . full day by girls in a Christchurch clothing > factory. The girls’ action followed.-the refusal of the employer to -.dismiss or discipline one girl whose attitude, as a fast worker, was reselited by her fellow employees. The strike was not complete, as some girls worked, pleading that they could not afford to lose a day’s wages. The dispute was resolved late in the afternoon by the girl apologising, and her workmates giving an assurance that they would accept her’ as a fellow worker.

Bridge Subsides Under Lorry. A fortunate escape from injury when the lorry he was driving, which was carrying a tractor, fell through the .decking of a suspension bridge over "the Mangatainoka River after it had given way, was experienced by Mr It. L. Parker, a resident of Pahiatua on Tuesday morning. When the decking gave way the truck and tractor were precipitated into the river. Had the bridge subsided under the front wheels of the truck it is possible that Mr Parker would have received serious injuries, as the tractor would have crashed forward through the driver’s cab. Remuneration of Coroners.

When the Coroners Amendment Bill was being discussed in the House of Representatives yesterday, Mr C. G. Harker (Nat., Waipawa) suggested that the time was opportune, to increase Coroners’ remuneration. The Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) said that would be “dealing with the quick as well as the dead.” Mr Harker said he thought they might be quicker in dealing with the dead if the wheels were oiled a little. The Attorney-General (Mr Mason) said he was not sure if legislative provision was necessary, but the matter could be investigated. The Bill was passed. Change in Weather. The indications yesterday that rain was not far away were borne out overnight, when heavy showers fell in the city. The Grasslands Division at Fitzherbert recorded 40 points up to 9.30 this morning. The rain was accompanied by strong gusts of wind at times. The soaking followed a dry spell and will be of great benefit to gardens. The last occasion on which rain fell was on November 14 when very light showers were experienced. Conditions in the city- yesterday were very humid and the shade temperature reached a maximum of 75 deg. as against a maximum reading of 71.5 deg. the previous day.
