INTERNEES ARRIVING
(Press Assn.) WELLINGTON. Sept. 27 Hon. W. Nash, speaking at the annual reunion of the Petone ' Fire Brigade last night, said that nearly 1100 internees released from Japanese camps would arrive in Auckland next week. The majority were of English extraction. Australia had been asked to care for them, hut had replied that accommodation was not available for them. The request was then referred to New Zealand, and within a short time 500 beds had been found. The rest would be found by the time the internees arrived. The following-New Zealand civilians and internees, all of whom served in the Malayan Volunteer Forces, are reported to have died. Sergt. A. Burns (Hamilton), Pte. L. Russell (Auckland), Spr. L. Watt (Ashburton). The following two merchant seamen ex the motor vessel Hauraki, who were previously interned, are now reported safe: R. L. Thomson (Wellington) and U. I). Wallace (Napier). The following civilians are reported safe: Lieut. W. It. Taylor (Oamaru) and Mr J. M. Smallfield (Auckland).
