TURAKINA TUNNELS
WORK HELD UP. LACK OF CEMENT. WANGANUI, Aug. 19Almost nine years to the day since the Public Works Department engineers were instructed to .begin tlie Okoia-Turaldna railway deviation project. the workers on this job are no being transferred to othei Lul lio Works Department undertakings because of insufficient cement to keep them all employed. This latest step means that it will be well into next year before the department hands the deviation over to the Railway Depart rnent for tracklaying and ballasting. By using long steel profiles for the reconcreting of the tunnel roofs and wall, the project required appioximately 350 tons of cement a week, fainco the" cement famine became serious about a month ago, a 1001-ton reserve of cement held by the Public WoiU Department has been exhausted, and now there is no hope of keeping up the reconcreting with the meagre supplies coming forward. The road work to which these men are being transferred will principally be the cutting back of bad corners m furtherance of the realignment scheme. “No cement is available at the pmscmt time and wo can’t keep the men going on the deviation, but, rather than dispense with their services, other work will be found,” said the district engineer (Mr G. \V. Sampson). Building operations in Wanganui are also being held up through a lack of cement, but it is hoped that the situation will be relieved to some extent early this week. The coastal steamer Holmlea is due about Monday or Tuesday with 500 tons of cement from Tarakohe.
