FEILDING
The news of t-he end of the war in Europe, which has been eagerly awaited, was received with enthusiasm this morning and while the celebrations do not officially take place until tomorrow there was general rejoicing and thanksgiving. Preparations for the celebrations were accelerated this morning, when business houses commenced displaying appropriate decorations. Although the announcement had been anticipated, the significance of the momentous news was hard to realise and many were at- a loss to understand the reason for the delay in proceeding wit!* ihe celebrations. Prior to instructions Inning been received to the effect that the celebrations would take place tomorrow, it had been arranged that immediately the news was received the iu’ebell, church bells anil whistles would herald the surrender of Nazi Germany a‘iid the absence of such signals this morning came as a surprise.
All Methodists throughout the circuit are invited to attend a special thanksgiving service to be held in the Fcilding Methodist Church at 7.30 p.m. tomorrow. An advertisement appears iri this issue. The Mayor (Mr Seddon) announces that the VIS-Day borough celebrations will he observed tomorrow, when the eitzens’ thanksgiving service in Manchester Square will take place at 2.30- p.m. In the evening services will he held in all the churches. At 7 o’clock and at 9 o’clock tomorrow morning bolls and sirens will he sounded and at 9 o’clock (lie official annon neon n cut- will bo made at the "Borough Council Chambers. An advertisement appears in this issue. _ .... Marking the cessation of hostilities m Europe, services will be held in St. John’s Church tomorrow as advertised in this issue. Those services will be in addition to the citizens’ service at 2.30 in Manchester Square. Members of the Fcilding R.S.A. arc requested to attend the VE-Day parade tomorrow. and are required to assemble at the Drill Hall at 1.30 p.m. The Golf Club’s Stableford bogey competition was won by C. B. I homas (senior) and W. F. Drube (junior). Leadinn- scores wore: —Senior: Thomas, 31pts; L.° M. Giesen, 30: T. Donaldson, A. C. McCoi'kiudalo and L. Gorton. 28. Junior: W. F. Drube, 35; M.
