MEAT TRADE OUTLOOK
EXPANSION OF MARKET. (Press Assn.) AUCKLAND, May 7. The recently appointed representative of the New Zealand Meat I rod.ners’ Board in Britain, Mi b A. Chisholm, formerly Director of. feta iilisation, ’has left Auckland on Ins way to England. Air Chisholm, who succeeds Air R. S. Forsyth for many years London manager of the board, will spend some time making inquiries in Canada and the United States. In an interview prior to his departure,. Air Chisholm said that although there was at present ’. an outlet for all the meat the Dominion was able to ship to Britain and the long-term contract with tile United Kingdom Alinistry of Food was an encouragement to" the Dominion farmers to maintain production at the maximum with an assured market, it was not too early to take in hand plans tor the post-war period when keen competition was sure to be resumed. “In peacetime it is necessary to carry on a very aggressive campaign in Britain to maintain our position against other meat-producing countries and this policy cannot be relaxed,” said Air Chisholm. “Aleat rationing and the national system of distribution are introducing New Zea.and moat to many thousands who ne\ ei purchased it- and the board s_ London office lias, evidence that the high quality of our meat has been so well maintained that there should be a wider demand than over when conditions return to normal. The producers are thus helping very materially in the important task of extending the demand for New Zealand meat in the United Kingdom. There is another way in which New Zealanders- can help this export industry: They must realise that Britain’s economic resources have been so drained in fighting tlie battle for world freedom that it will need to expand its pre-war exports tremendously. There will consequently be greater insistence on the point that as Britain buys from us we must buy from her. In other words, the slogan of every New Zealander must be ‘Buy British Goods’.”
