DEATH OF GIRL
AFIER LEAVING HOSPITAL. (Press Assn.) AUCKLAND, Mar. 7. a patient might be suffering from an infectious disease he could not be prevented from leaving the Auckland Hospital, said Dr. W. H. Johnston, a house surgeon at the hospital, when giving evidence at an inquest held by the Coroner (Mr Addison). Witness said that, provided the patient signed an indemnity relieving the hospital authorities of responsibility for the consequence of his action, he could not be forced to remain in the hospital. If he suffered from a disease notifiable under the Health Act he would bo warned that it was a criminal offence to leave the hospital, and if he then left the Health Department would be notified and it would take action.
The inquest concerned the death of Grace Rameka, aged 14, who died on December 26 after she had been taken from the Green Lane Hospital by her parents on December 25. She was suffering from pneumonia and had an infection of the lung which was described in evidence as being an infectious, although not a notifiable, disease.
