ROAMING ENEMY WATERS
TASK FOKCE UNCHALLENGED. NEW YORK, Feb. 22. The United Press correspondent with the United States task force off Japan writing under date of February 17 says: “For two days and one night this mighty fleet roamed unchallenged through the mine-dotted waters of Honshu while hundreds of carrier planes dealt a crippling blow at Tokio’s air defences, engine plants and coastline shipping. No enemy aircraft or surface ships penetrated our destroyer screen and none of our capital ships fired a shot. “For a great deal of the time we were only half an hour’s flying time from Tokio’s airfields. The task force steaming ' almost into Tokio Ray audaciously patrolled the Japanese coast challenging the enemy air force and navy.” The Associated Press reports that snow, sleet and rain prevented the planes from taking an even heavier toll than the 509 enemy planes destroyed and 33 ships sunk.
