N.Z. PAINTINGS IN ITALY
AVAR ARTIST’S EXHIBITION
(Official War Correspondent, N.Z.E.F.) FAENZA, Feb. 20.
Realism is the keynote of an exhibition of recent works of the official New Zealand war artist, Captain Peter McIntyre, now being shown to troops in the forward areas. It is the aim ol the artist to’give every soldier in the division an opportunity to seo these paintings, which, with few exceptions, have been done in Italy since his re-, turn from furlough. In the present show there arc paintings of the Cassino period of divisional history, with a large oil of the bombing of the Cassino monastery as the centre piece. These and other pictures in the first category of war art give a feeling of authenticity which the usual gaudy impressionism lacks. There is hardly one soldier of those portrayed who could he other than a Kiwi. It- is always a fruitful point of discussion whether there is a distinctive New Zealand cast ot features, but it has long been realised in the division that no matter in what company you can pick a Kiwi “a mile off”, and it is that certain something which Captain Mclntyre has caught with his brush. Humour and downrightness of the Kiwi type are very present in such paintings as “Kiwis Brewing Up” and in sketches of the lighter side of army life, such as “Two-up School” and “Fatigue”.
