HUGE INCREASE IN CRIME

DRIVE BY N.S.W. VICE SQUAD SYDNEY, Jan. 4. During 1944 the New South Wales police vice squad arrested more than 17,000 persons in the worst wave of crime and vice in ' the history of the State. The convictions secured numbered 15,695 compared with 8679 in 1943. Of the persons convicted 3464 were women and the fines imposed in 1944 totalled £50,036 compared with £26,345 in 1943. For breaches of the Gaming Act 6625 men and 336 women were convicted with fines totalling £26,312 and forfeitures £llßs. Sly-grog convictions were of 332 males and 43 females who paid fines totalling £15,245. Liquor seized included nearly 14,000 bottles of beer, spirits and wine. Sex and drug offenders numbered 5274 males and 3085 females.

Officers of the vice squad said the intensified drive would continue this year, but it was expected that the vice figures would be lower.
